Art Mission Statement
It is the vision of St Declan’s College ‘s Art Department to nurture and explore the artist within all students by encouraging them to work together and realise their full potential in a healthy, safe, stimulating and friendly environment, where the atmosphere is of mutual respect, co-operation. We support our students to actively engage in the process of art, craft and design in order to develop as independent learners and as critical and reflective thinkers with inquisitive minds.
Programmes and Levels
Students can study Art in the following programmes:
- Junior Certificate-Higher and Ordinary
- Leaving Certificate-higher and Ordinary
- Transition Year (module unit only introduced in 2009)
Subject Objectives
- To introduce students to a broad range of art, craft and design disciplines.
- To develop in the student an interest and understanding of art, craft and design in an historical, cultural and social context
- To equip the students with the vocabulary and critical evaluation skills to engage with a piece of work, be it an artwork, a 3-d object, a craft piece or a mass produced visual.
- To develop critical thinking, independent learning and intellectual curiosity in both theory and application.
- To develop a sense of personal identity and self-esteem through practical achievement in the expressive, communicative and functional modes of art.
- To increase self-discipline regarding work.
- To build projects from conception to realisation.
- To exercise creativity while working within structures and finding solutions that reflect each individual.
