Mathematics
Higher Level Mathematics
This course is aimed at the more able studentĀ for whom it is a prerequisite for career and further study aspirations. It also caters for the student who has a special interest in the subject. TheĀ Higher Level course aims to provide:
- A deeper understanding of mathematical ideas
- An appreciation of powerful concepts and methods
- The ability to solve problems (abstract and general)
- To prove certain results specified in the syllabus.
- Generate competency in algebraic manipulation
Requirements for entry to a higher level class are:
- Grade A or B in Higher Level Junior Certificate Mathematics are automatically accepted into the class
- Consideration may be given, after consultation with their junior certificate teacher to any student receiving a C grade in their Higher Level Junior Certificate Mathematics
- No grades D, E, or F will be accepted. If the student has not proven themselves able at junior certificate level, they are not considered able for higher level at the Leaving Certificate
Ordinary Level Mathematics
The purpose of this course is to equip students who require Mathematics to gain entry to college. The aims of the syllabus can be interpreted as follows:
- A widening of the span of the student’s understanding from a relatively concrete and practical level to a more abstract and general one
- The acquisition of mathematical techniques and their use in context
- A proficiency in basic skills of arithmetic and algebra
A student needs to have studied and sat Mathematics at higher or ordinary level for the Junior Certificate.
Foundation Mathematics
This course is intended primarily as a terminal course in Mathematics, equipping students with the knowledge and techniques required in everyday life, and in various categories of employment. It builds up the student’s confidence, their enjoyment of the subject and their recognition of its role in the world around us.
This course is open to any student who:
- Has studied foundation level for the Junior Certificate
- Found ordinary level at Junior Certificate too difficult
