On Friday, 14th November 2019, Ireland held its first ever youth assembly which took place in Dáil Eireann. The theme for the assembly was Climate Change and Action. The sessions were chaired by the Ceann Comhairle Seán Ó Feargháil and broadcast live by RTÉ. Deliberations of the delegates were formulated into a list of priority actions and presented to Minister for Communications, Climate Action and the Environment, Richard Bruton TD.
6th year student Jean Ted Deliev was one of the 157 young people (10-17 years of age) drawn from all around the 26 counties to voice the opinions of their peers. It is a fantastic honour to have been chosen as a member of the inaugural assembly and testament to the awareness of our students of global issues. Jean Ted's passion for politics has been developed through politics and society which he is studying for his Leaving Certificate. This will be the first year St Declan's students undergo examination at Leaving Certificate Level. Clearly the enthusiasm with which Mr Rickard and Ms Doyle have created for the subject is bearing fruit.
