Home Farm U19's sparkle in provincial cup final

Sunday April 24 2022
Home Farm FC v Newbridge Town FC
Frank Cooke Park

The LFA under 19 cup final was contested between Newbridge Town FC and Home Farm FC. Two current and three former students were playing for Home Farm; Liam Burke (6 Ciarán), Jamie Carrick (6 Breandán), William Chelaru, Kleinfield Newti and Kevin Platon.
With the first round of the competition played in October 2021 it had been a long road to the final.
The game kicked off at 1pm and was played at a high pace throughout. Newbridge had some early chances but couldn’t break Home Farm down. 30 minutes in Home Farm took the lead and 5 minutes later Liam Burke scored a goal from 25 yards that a professional would be proud of.
In the second half Newbridge had a man sent off and pushed more players forward to try get back into the game. Home Farm caught them on a counter-attack with 10 minutes to go to make it 3-0 and all but seal the win.
The lads have more silverware to chase this season with a league play-off final and a Leinster Senior league cup quarter-final coming up.

There is a lovely Cabra / Home Farm / Manchester United connection with this team. Current Leaving Certificate student Liam Burke 's grand uncle was of one of the Busby Babes, Liam Whelan. Tragically, Liam Whelan perished in the Munich Air disaster at the tender age of 22 just when his career was starting off. It seems that his grand nephew has inherited some of his sporting genius. This was shown during the cup final when he scored a cracking goal in the 3 - 0 tie.
