Supervised Study in St Declan's College

Studies in St Declan's College

After School Studies:

St Declan's College offers an excellent after school studies facility to the students of the school.

The aim of supervised study is to provide a suitable environment where students can do their homework and study.

Supervised study at school is suitable for all students and may be particularly suitable for students who find it difficult to settle down to a regular scheduled programme at home. Such students will benefit from remaining in the school environment which they associate with study.

I would ask that you to take the time to discuss supervised study with your son. Encourage him to avail of this option when you both know that study at home may prove difficult.

The academic year is short and a regular and consistent schedule of work should pay dividends at exam time.

Supervised Study will start at 4.10pm and finish at 6.10pm every day, apart from Wednesday.

The fee for this programme is €120 from September to December and €120 from January to May (Snacks will be available to students before studies begin).

Places are limited and will be offered on a first come first served basis. If you and your son wish to avail of this service please contact Mr Ó Laighin.

Habit is what keeps you going"

How much should I study?

Every student is different, but below is a rough guide to how many hours you should spend every day on homework and study combined. Remember it takes experimentation to find out what suits you.

First Year - 1.5 hours per day

Second Year - 2 hours per day

Third Year - 2.5/3 hours per day

Fifth Year - 3/4 hours per day

Sixth Year - 3.5/5 hours per day

This is just a rough guideline which should be adapted as your situation requires. Of course, the hours should be increased close to exam time to help with extra revision or project work.

Remember the saying: "Fail to prepare, prepare to fail"
