Role of Parents
St. Declan’s has had a Parents’ Council since the 1990’s and it plays a significant role in the life of the school. All parents are invited and encouraged to attend the monthly meetings of the Council, as the most effective way of keeping themselves informed of developments in education generally and in the school in particular and as a means of participating in the decision making processes of the school.
The role of parents in the education of their children is a major element in the Education Act of 1998. Parents are consulted on such matters as the school’s Code of Conduct, policies on bullying and many other aspects of school life. Every three years, the Parents’ Council organises the election of their two nominees to the Board of Management. Their meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each month at 8.00pm.
Each year the council holds elections for its officers. The offices are chairperson, secretary and treasurer. The current (2015-16) chairperson is Eva McDonagh, secretary is Frances Boland and treasurer is Amy Dunican. The acting chairperson is Jacinta Clarke, acting secretary is Winna Phelan and acting treasurer is Celia Tyrrell.
