St Declan's College

The role of prefect is one of leadership given to students in their sixth year. Students, towards the end of fifth year, submit a written application outlining the reasons they would like to become a prefect and describing their involvement in the school during their time here. Following consideration of each application students are invited to become a prefect and accept the duties, challenges and opportunities the role offers.

One of the early involvements prefects have is to help our incoming first years to make a smooth transition into St Declan’s. Each prefect is assigned four first year students who they will look out for in the early weeks and months. They help them to adjust to the daily movement from class to class, with the use of lockers, organisation of books and familiarisation with the school rules and code of behaviour. They are there to provide a friendly face each day and often act as a first port of call when a younger student has any concerns. They are able to channel the more serious issues to the appropriate teacher, tutor, year head, Deputy Principal or Principal. In short they act as a ‘Big Brother’.

Other duties of prefects include the daily organisation and movement of students during mid-morning break, helping out on major school occasions, preparing the school gymnasium for events and acting as ambassadors for the school.

Some members of the prefect body are appointed as officers to the student council. The head prefect is appointed School Captain. He is assisted by two Vice-Captains. Other officer roles are treasurer, secretary, P.R.O, IT co-ordinator, and representatives of 1st, 2nd & 3rd year.

The School Captain for 2020/21 is Matthew Flanagan and the Vice-Captains are Max Cleary and Byron Cortez.

The prefect body has proved, since its inception, to be an invaluable resource for the school and an excellent opportunity to develop the leadership qualities our students possess.
