Three guests, including Irish Ambassador to New Zealand Jane Connelly, Desk Officer Brian Egan from the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs, and Sgt Paul Clarke from the Irish Defence Forces, recently visited our school recently. They engaged Leaving Cert Politics and History students in a discussion on the history and role of Irish diplomacy and peacekeeping.
Ambassador Connelly shared insights into the life of an ambassador, emphasizing the challenges and rewards of representing Ireland abroad with amusing experiences about representing Ireland in New Zealand during the tense Rugby World Cup season. Brian Egan provided a behind-the-scenes look at the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs, highlighting the intricacies of and routes into a career in diplomacy. Sgt Paul Clarke's firsthand experiences in international peacekeeping missions showcased Ireland's commitment to global stability.
The students actively participated in a Q&A session, gaining valuable insights into the day-to-day responsibilities of diplomats and the challenges faced by peacekeeping forces. The visit left a lasting impression, inspiring students and fostering a deeper understanding of Ireland's global contributions in diplomacy and peacekeeping.
